PRO Vision : a meeting point for people, concepts & organizations
Metabrain Research was created as a Partnering Research Organization (PRO) to share its vision of innovative early stage research, with two ambitions:
- Develop innovative first-in-class drugs based on the connections between metabolic and CNS disorders
- Unite its partners around sustainable drug discovery business models
A PRO’s ambition is to generate more than optimized preclinical candidate compounds. Indeed, a PRO also contributes to scientific progress through interaction between public and private research, to validate novel targets and generate innovative research tools. This open, multi-stakeholder approach to innovation represents for us the key to unlock to the path to groundbreaking discoveries.
A meeting point for people
The road to developing novel, market-relevant drugs with innovative mechanism of action is long. Along this road, the drug discovery process needs innovative targets and relevant research tools. That’s why the research carried-out at Metabrain and its partners extends from basic research to industrial proof of principle, through experimental tool development. Together, we innovate in all the areas necessary to achieve groundbreaking preclinical research.
Diversity is an important component of the partner network we nurture and are constantly developing. Our network is composed of research groups working on metabolism, CNS, as well as scientists working on nutrition, ageing and well-being. From biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to academics all the way to Venture Capitalists, regional clusters and even retired scientists, we aim to attract people from all background to participate in the scientific dynamic we fuel.

A meeting point for scientific concepts
Metabrain Research works on three interconnected scientific concepts.
- Metabolic disorders research, in particular glucose sensitizing mechanisms
- Biological targets initially identified in the CNS, and their role in metabolic diseases
- The impact of metabolic states on brain function and CNS activity.
These concepts can be explored by taking chemistry as well as biology approaches. On one hand we investigate the structural similarity between compounds affecting central or “metabolic” targets. On the other we look at the metabolic pathways which are involved in either metabolic or neurodegenerative diseases.

A meeting point for organizations
Pharmaceutical research faces a conundrum: Pharmaceutical companies pay a high-price for innovative products to strengthen their pipelines, but at the same time biotech companies encounter difficulties funding the earliest stages of their research…
Metabrain was created to address this question with a vision of a sustainable drug discovery business model benefitting all the stakeholders.
Our business model implies a mix of partnerships with:
- Academics to validate “lead concepts”, drug targets and novel experimental models
- Biotech & Pharma to contribute to their pipeline progression through risk-sharing models, involving the most substantial payments once projects deliver results.
- Biotech, Pharma & Food industries for collaborative research and drug discovery programs, so which are proposed by Metabrain.
- Venture Capital interested in financing the projects emanating from our collaborations, that we develop through spin-off companies with our partners.
